Beatrice Hawley (1944-1985) taught at Brandeis and first published with the encouragement of Denise Levertov. In addition to Making The House Fall Down,her first book, Hawley published one other, Nothing Is Lost(Apple-Wood). Her poetry appeared in the anthology Making for the Open (Chatto & Windus), and many periodicals, including Ploughshares, Mid-American Review, and The American Poetry Review. She founded an anti-nuclear coalition of writers, New England Writers for Survival. The Collected Poems of Beatrice Hawley (Zoland Books) was edited by Denise Levertov and published posthumously.
