New Gloucester, Maine, January 24, 2024 - Alice James Books (AJB), a leading independent poetry publisher, today announced that it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $45,000. In total, the NEA will award 958 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling more than $27.1 million that were announced as part of its first round of fiscal year 2024 grants.
“The NEA is delighted to announce this grant to Alice James Books, which is helping contribute to the strength and well-being of the arts sector and local community,” said National Endowment for the Arts Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “We are pleased to be able to support this community and help create an environment where all people have the opportunity to live artful lives.”
The press currently publishes an average of 8 books a year and maintains a list of over 250 titles. In addition, the press helps its writers achieve purposeful engagement with a broad audience and communities. These grant funds will support the ebook and print publication, distribution, and promotion of new works of poetry. Scheduled 2024 authors include: Sarah Ghazal Ali, Omotara James, Jean Valentine, Kevin Goodan, Donald Revell, Joshua Jennifer Espinoza, Joan Larkin, Ayokunle Falomo, Alessandra Lynch, Alicia Ostriker, and Duy Doan.
"Alice James is overjoyed to receive such foundational support from the National Endowment for the Arts this year, along with many other esteemed organizations who sustain and nourish our national literary ecosystem. These funds will aid the press significantly in publishing and promoting our amazing roster of 2024 poets, especially as costs to independent arts organizations and publishers continue to increase dramatically." said Carey Salerno, Executive Director & Publisher of Alice James Books.

About Alice James Books
Founded in 1973, Alice James Books publishes books that matter, preserves a place of belonging for poets who inspire us, and seeks to broaden our collective interpretation of what constitutes the American poetic voice. AJB provides a platform from which to elevate established and emerging voices and literary artists of excellence with an emphasis on supporting artists whose voices have been historically marginalized or who offer overlooked perspectives. The press emphasizes collaborative partnership with authors, supporting writers throughout their careers, connecting them to a broad audience, and helping them tell stories that matter. Alice James Books is named after the sister of the philosopher William James and novelist Henry James, Alice James. Keenly self-aware, Alice started writing a journal in 1889 as a vehicle for self-expression within the confines of the Victorian period in which she lived and its narrow view of womanhood. Since the publication of her journal in its entirety in 1964, Alice James has been celebrated as a feminist icon and diarist.
