...preserving the legacy of Alice James Books
Just stay alive; that’s all I ask, answered Jane Kenyon when AJB asked her what she most wanted for the Press. The documents founding Alice James Books in 1973 solidified the press as a “cooperative committed to the principles that a group of practicing poets can best determine what poetry should appear and how…” Several decades later, we continue to honor the strength and vision of Lee Rudolph, Patsy Cumming, Besty Sholl, Marjorie Fletcher, Jean Pedrick, Ron Schreiber, and Cornelia Veenendaal by preserving the values they so astutely assigned to our press with the Alice Fund.
The mission of The Alice Fund is to ensure the long-term financial stability and further the long-term strategic goals of Alice James Books.
The Alice Fund maintains a conservative management and investment policy. Our assets are managed by Western Mountain Financial in Farmington, Me. Each year, up to 5% of the Fund may be distributed to Alice James Books to be used as income for ordinary expenses or for other special projects.
Your endowment gift ensures a future for poetry and a future for the cooperative publishing process. When you give to preserve our legacy, you will be ensuring the publication of Alice James books for years and generations to come. Our poets and our books reach an incredibly wide and diverse audience. Veterans, mothers, fathers, social activists, history buffs (to name a few) have all been inspired by Alice James Books. And to think, we all know at least one person who falls into one of those four categories… and even that list goes on!
Your gift to the Alice Fund may come in many forms. You may give a one-time gift, set up annual contributions, make a gift on a loved one’s or friend’s behalf, or write a plan for Alice James Books right into your estate. Gifts may be even by made in stocks or bonds, or you may also consider individual or corporate sponsorship and matching opportunities. However you choose to give, poetry salutes and appreciates your conscious efforts to preserve this great art, and Alice James becomes a life-long, best friend.
When we consider the immense history of the written word―from the time of bards to contemporary poetry, we have an immediate sense of how remarkable this art form is, how truly necessary and unique, how important it is to our understanding of history, and even how we, without being completely aware at times, carry the poet’s torch in our very hearts. For who doesn’t have the desire to sing in times of great happiness? And who among us hasn’t felt the low, thronging music of melancholy. Our intrinsic poetry, our visceral connection―heart to mind is our connection with each other, our humanity. This is what we work to preserve, to dignify and respect and we’re glad to share this mission with you through the Alice Fund.
